Defensive Driving
Get 6 months off your Restricted Licence. Learn how to pass the Full Licence Test.
During your New Zealand Defensive Driving Course (DDC), we'll teach you key driving skills needed to avoid crashes.
We do this with five separate training sessions. The theory sessions run on the first two weeks of each month, Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. There is a small amount of homework to complete.
The fifth is an in-car practical session usually done on the Saturday following the last theory session. In total, it takes about nine hours to complete the course.
To start the course, you'll need to hold either:
A restricted licence (if you are under 25 you must have held this for at least 6 months)
A full licence
Note:
The Defensive Driving Course earns you the right to sit your Full Licence Test earlier (for both cars and motorbikes.
If you under 25 you must have held your Restricted Licence for 6 months before you can do the course. If you are over 25 you can do the course anytime after you get your Restricted Licence.
If you are under 25 the course cuts the time you must be on the Restricted Licence before being eligible to do the Full Licence Test from 18 months to 12 months
If you are over 25 it cuts the waiting time from 6 months to 3 months.
