Dangerous Goods Endorsement
What does this Endorsement cover?
If you are carrying Dangerous Goods as part of your job you need a DG endorsement on your driver’s licence.
Dangerous goods include: flammables; toxic, infectious or corrosive substances; solvent-based paints; chemicals; explosives; and containers that have held any of those items; compressed air cylinders; LPG cylinders.
If you are carrying those loads without a DG then the truck is not insured.
What do I need first?
A Driver Licence for the class of vehicle you will be driving. Example: couriers driving a van would need a Class 1 car licence (can be Class 1 Restricted). Truck drivers would need either Class 2, 4 or 5 licence (depending on the size of the truck).
You do not need to do a Medical Certificate for Driver Licence but you will have to do an eyesight test when you lodge your application.
How do I get a DG Endorsement?
You need to complete Drivewright’s NZ Transport Agency Approved Course and receive a course completion certificate and an application form. You take these to a driver licensing agent (AA or VTNZ) and pay a fee of $44.00 to get the Endorsement attached to your licence.
They will write you are temporary licence with the DG on it. You walk out the door licensed and ready to go to work.
You will receive a replacement plastic driver licence card in the post in about a week. This will show the endorsement expiry date on the back of the card. Make sure you renew it before it expires.
