STEP 1 – THE CLASS 5 LEARNERS LICENCE
You need to have held a full Class 4 Licence for at least 3 months (or 6 months if you are under 25). The you must get a Class 5 Learners licence:
Fill out the attached application form, tick the box for Class 5 Learners Licence
See your Doctor for a Medical Certificate for Driver Licence (unless you have already provided one for driver licensing purposes within the last 5 years, e.g for your class 2 or 4 licence)
Get printed proof of address (like a power bill bank statement)
Lodge your application at any AA or VTNZ branch that does driver licence applications
Pay a fee of $93.90
Do the road code tests. (We can email you a study guide with all the questions and correct answers). Pass the tests and they write you a paper temporary licence with class 5L. Now you are legal to drive a Class 5 truck and trailer under supervision. You get a new driver licence card in the post about a fortnight later.
STEP 2 – THE CLASS 5 FULL LICENCE
Then complete and return the enrolment form below. We’ll book you in for a 2 day course comprising:
Class 5 theory (Unit Standard 176577)
All the driving tuition you need, in a Class 5 truck with a load (supplied by us)
Driving assessment
Note: You will also need to prove that you have completed Unit Standard 24089, Fatigue Management, Work Time and Driver Logbook Requirements for driver licensing requirements with an approved course provider (eg for Class 2 or 4, P or V, in the previous 2 years). If this cannot be proven you will also have to do a 1 day Logbook course at an extra cost of $300. These courses are done on a Wednesday.
How much?
The normal course fee is $950 incl GST – unless you also need to do the Logbook unit standard, then its $1250.
What Next?
On completion:
you will receive a Class 5 Full Licence Course certificate
Take that back to VTNZ, with proof of address, and pay $49.60
They write you a paper temporary Class 5 Licence. Now you’re legal to drive a Class 5 truck unsupervised from that point - and you get the replacement plastic driver licence card in the post about a fortnight later.
