STEP 1 – THE CLASS 4 LEARNERS LICENCE
You need have held a Class 2 Full Licence for at least 3 months (or 6 months if you are under 25). Then you need to get a class 4 learners licence:
Fill out the attached DL20 application form, tick the box for class 4 Learners
Get a medical certificate for driver licence (unless you have already provided one for driver licensing purposes within the last 5 years, e.g for your class 2 licence)
Get printed proof of address (like a power bill bank statement)
Lodge your application at any AA or VTNZ branch that does driver licence applications
pay a fee of $49.60
No medical certificate or road code tests required.They write you a paper temporary licence with class 4L. Now you are legal to drive a class 4 truck under supervision – you get a replacement plastic driver licence card in the post about a fortnight later.
STEP 2 – THE CLASS 4 FULL LICENCE
Then complete and return the attached enrolment form. We’ll book you in for a 1 day course comprising:
Class 4 theory (pretty much the same as the class 2)
All the driving tuition you need in a class 4 truck with a load
Driving assessment
How much?
The cost is $700 incl GST. It’s usually a fortnight from when the booking is made to when the course is done as we have to arrange the hire of a truck and the placement of a suitable load and restraints.
Note
You will also need to prove that you have completed Unit Standard 24089, Fatigue Management, Work Time and Driver Logbook Requirements for driver licensing requirements with an approved course provider (eg for Class 2 in the previous 2 years). If this cannot be proven you will also have to do a 1 day Logbook course at a cost of $300. These courses are done every Wednesday.
What next?
On completion you will receive a Class 4 Full Licence Course certificate. Take that back to VTNZ with proof of address, and pay $49.60
