DriveWright class2 licence

Day 1, Tuesday

Arrive at the office (1st floor, 68 Kingsford Smith St, Lyall Bay, Wellington) at 8 am sharp, complete the application forms, have a refresher on the road code.

We’ll take you round to VTNZ lodge your application and put you through the road code tests. Once you pass you will get your Class 2 Learners Licence.
Note: if you don’t pass the first time you can do it again straightaway for another $44.00

Then it’s back to school to learn NZQA Unit Standard 24089 Fatigue Management, Work Time and Driver Logbook Requirements.

Day 2, Wednesday

We’ll teach you Unit Standard 17574 Operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full Class 2 driver licence

You’ll learn all about trucks:

  • legal requirements, load placement, restraint systems, pre-trip safety inspections,
  • and specialized driving techniques including managing the engine, gearbox, steering,
  • how to manage road hazards, and much more.

We'll finish about 4pm.

Day 3, Thursday or Friday

It's out on the road for individual driver training. Then we do a driving assessment. Depending on course numbers, the driving may happen on the Saturday - or by appointment. Half a day's tuition and assessment per person is usually enough. If you need more time in the truck that is charged separately at $85 an hour plus GST.

Once you have passed we issue the NZTA Certificate for a Class 2 Full Licence. Then it’s back down to VTNZ to lodge your certificate and receive your Full Licence.

Now you are legal to drive any truck or bus up to 18 tonnes in weight – and you're eligible for truck driving jobs.
